Ethical conduct
Human rights
Iliad applies the fundamental rights contained in the International Labour Organisation’s charter, namely:
- freedom of association
- abolition of forced labour
- equality
- elimination of child labour.
The group complies with the bill of rights on labour relations as outlined in the Constitution of South Africa (clause 23 (1) to (6)).
Iliad complies with all relevant legislation on employment practices.
Iliad embraces the right to freedom of association. Around 45% (2009: 40%) of the group’s employees are represented by labour unions.
In 2010 no unprotected industrial action occurred. There were two short protected strikes as a result of wage disputes, but these were amicably resolved.
Iliad does not currently consider human rights performance when making procurement or supplier selection decisions. most of our suppliers and customers are either publicly listed or large companies. The Company would not knowingly contract with any entity involved in human rights abuses.
Ethics and transparency
Iliad has created a group-wide, secure and independent channel to facilitate whistle blowing. Iliad does not tolerate bribery or corruption and does not pay or receive bribes. Comprehensive training on the relevant legislation, i.e. Competition Act and corporate governance principles, took place during the year.
Customer confidentiality
Iliad treats all customer information as confidential. There were no reported breaches of confidentiality or customer data being lost.
Political contribution
The group does not contribute to any political parties.
Laws regulations and compliance
Significant fines and sanctions are imposed for non-compliance with laws and regulations.
Fines and penalties
Iliad has not received any fines for non-compliance with laws and regulations on the provision and use of our products and services or for transgressing any legislation on employment practices.
Environmental laws
The group does not transport hazardous material and is not aware of any environmental incidents in the past year. Iliad will, however, continue to monitor compliance as required by environmental laws relating to emissions, effluents and waste as well as occupational health and safety.

The Iliad Code of Ethics is our promise that these ethical standards will underpin every feature of our endeavours, both corporate and individual.
The Iliad Code of Ethics describes the standards of conduct that our colleagues and stakeholders (e.g., clients, suppliers, national and international authorities, communities and investors) can expect of us.
It also sets the standards of conduct that we expect from colleagues and other stakeholders.
All employees, suppliers and agents of Iliad are expected and required to comply with the provisions detailed in this Iliad Code of Ethics and to maintain the highest ethical standards, to ensure that the Group’s business practices are conducted in a manner that, in all circumstances, is beyond reproach.
I personally commit to the standards outlined in this Code and ask each of you to do likewise.
